DE Pool Filters:
Diatomaceous earth (DE) pool filters are often promoted for their ability to filter out the smallest particles, even finer than sand or cartridge filters. However, this type of filter comes with significant downsides.
First, DE powder is a known lung irritant and must be handled with care, requiring protective gear to avoid inhalation.
Second, the cleaning process for DE filters is more intensive and messy; the DE must be removed and re-applied regularly, which can lead to improper disposal of the used material, potentially harming the environment.
Additionally, DE filters require backwashing, which wastes a large amount of water and puts stress on the pool’s plumbing system. Over time, these filters can become clogged and inefficient if not maintained perfectly, leading to frequent servicing and higher operational costs.
Furthermore, many regions are starting to restrict or discourage the use of DE due to the environmental hazard of disposing DE powder into storm drains or soil. For these reasons, many professionals now prefer cartridge or regenerative media filters, which are easier to maintain, safer to handle, and more eco-friendly over time.
When DE is mixed with Chlorine:
When diatomaceous earth (DE) filters are used in a pool that also relies on chlorine for sanitation, the combination can become highly problematic over time. DE is made of microscopic fossilized algae with sharp, porous particles that trap fine debris—but when chlorine interacts with the organic contaminants trapped in the DE, it can trigger chemical reactions that produce toxic byproducts.
These byproducts, such as chloramines and trihalomethanes, are known to cause eye and skin irritation, breathing problems, and even long-term health risks.
On top of that, chlorine aggressively reacts with any organic matter stuck in the DE filter, creating a continuous chemical breakdown cycle that releases gases and compounds into the water and air around the pool.
The DE itself can degrade and combine with minerals and chlorine residues, creating a sludge-like substance that clogs pipes, damages pool equipment, and reduces overall water quality.
Essentially, the chlorine-DE interaction doesn't just clean—it can chemically overload your system and introduce a form of toxic soup that’s harsh on swimmers and destructive to pool infrastructure.
